Piano Lessons

Yes. At the New City School of Music, piano lessons are available for absolute beginners all the way up to advanced students. Ages of our current student range from 4 to 80. We offer personalized lessons to help students reach their goals.

That question is often asked by prospective students. The answer is that our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals.

We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.

A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a fifty-seven year old taking up piano for the 2nd time after having had lessons as a child.

Our instructors are well versed in all styles of piano: classical, jazz, broadway, contemporary, church/ gospel, and pop! Our piano teachers’ individual approach to each student teaches students music theory, sight reading, composition, correct technique and more in order to make them the piano player they want to be!

No. Piano students do not need a piano at home to get started with lessons. A full size keyboard is all that is needed to get started.

Lessons are offered in weekly in 60 minute, 45 minute and 30 minute formats. Beginning students are encouraged to start with a 30 minute lesson, while more advanced students are encouraged to take longer lessons. Lessons length is also dependent upon a student’s goals. If a student is preparing for an audition or performance, they may benefit from a longer lesson each week, or coming multiple times per week.

Learning music is not just a matter of having a qualified teacher, but also an environment that is focused on music education. Our experience – and likely yours as well – is that in home lessons , while convenient, results in poor progress and meager results. Simply by being at home, kids mentally shift into an out-of-school mindset that makes motivation and concentration difficult. In a professional school environment a student cannot be distracted by T.V., pets, ringing phones, siblings or anything else. With only ½ to one hour of lesson time per week, a professional studio can produce better results since the only focus at that time is learning music. In a studio environment, the lessons are not just a hobby or side-line for the teacher, but a responsibility which is taken very seriously.
